Drs. Riskin and Banker on the field of
Marriage and Marital Therapy:
"Marriages, like
friendships, are made by people of the same or similar
level of emotional maturity. Our friendships and our
marriages reflect our own levels of emotional maturity.
Psychologist have been able to predict whether a couple
will stay together or divorce with a 95% accuracy during
their first year of marriage. Married men live longer,
have fewer illnesses, and enjoy greater professional success than
their single counterparts. Love does not grow where Control lives.
Integrity and honesty are the lifelong partners of intimacy. The four actions that are
most corrosive to marriages are: Criticism/Blame, Defensiveness,
Contempt/Direct Insults, and Stonewalling. Good marriage therapy
helps couples to live well without a therapist. Good therapist know
how to work
themselves out of a job."
